The final week of November 2013 will mark a highlight of the South African poetry calendar, as the 3rd Annual Word N Sound International Youth Poetry + Live Music Festival gets underway, brought to you in partnership with British Council Connect ZA, Live Mag SA, Bozza Mobile, SAMRO Foundation, Rora and Black Letter Media.

Word N Sound presents the premiere poetry showcase in all of Johannesburg, however, for their third festival, they are taking it onto an inter-provincial scale. Adding a Cape Town leg to the Johannesburg based festival, the 4-day spoken word feast kicks off at the District Six Homecoming Centre where local poets will share a stage with Catherine Labiran and Harry Baker from the United Kingdom.

This year in addition to the festival Word N Sound, Live Mag SA and the British Council Connect ZA brings you #CreativeHustles which focus on digital tools for the new age artist including panel members from Roundhouse, Bozza Mobile and Word N Sound in both Cape Town on 27 November  and Johannesburg on 28 November. The session is also an opportunity to see snippets of what the performances will be like during the 3-day festival. Look out for performances by:

Catherine Labiran is a 19 year old international poet that draws in her audience like a black hole and explodes passion like a Super Nova. Catherine uses her African-American-British background to provide unique commentary on worldly matters. She utilizes her Hip Hop background to influence the rhythm in her raw and passionate poetry. She holds the title as one of the SLAMbassador UK winners for 2010 and she is an associate artist of The Roundhouse with her collective “Elephant”.

“My introduction into music, poetry and performing started when I was still very young. You see, I got my inspiration to perform from the choir my mum used to conduct and as I got older, I got opportunities to lead the choir in some songs. This created a strong foundation because it gave me the confidence to be able to perform in front of a variety of people,” says ?oem The Ansa.”

Bhekumusa Moyo Zim Poet (@Protest_Poet)
