Sam Lehoko has come a long way to being one of Cape Town’s well know photographers. At just 21 Sam owns a photography company (SML Photography), is a UCT radio DJ and is still going strong. This young blood uses three words to describe herself : “young, gifted and black”. I had the opportunity to sit and interview this interesting young lady who is originally born in the Eastern Cape, East London but grew up in the U.K till she came back to South Africa, Pretoria to for primary school. She then moved to Cape Town in 2004 and studied drama at first which then led her to her passion which is photography.
She went further in her passion and enrolled into a three year course at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology ” I fell in love with it within two months into the course and since then I have taken it as my career” she said. As a people’s person she said she found her way to being one of cape town’s well known photographer’s much easier for her to accomplish. She also stated that photography comes with a lot of challenges such as being requested to take photo’s that you might not be comfortable to capture but through it all she never stopped doing what she loved . As a photographer she likes to capture fashion, portraits and events pictures. After a while into the interview I spotted a tattoo of a vintage SLR camera on her right arm she said “its a reflection of what I do and who I am, its there for life and photography is something I will carry through too”. After out chat Sam had this to say to young up coming photographer’s “put yourself out there thats’s the only way people will get to notice your work and also take up any opportunity that you get offered paying or not”.
