The Western Province Transfusion Service is a non-profit organisation that operates throughout the Western Cape. Each year they collect more than 78 million litres of blood and this is due to the dedication of the donors. They use the latest technology to ensure that the donors as well as the recipients are safe.

So why should you care? you ask. Well research shows that 75% of the population in the Western Cape will need blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Only 1.5% however are donors. So you do the math. It would be difficult for them to meet the demand unless you join them and become a donor.

Some things you need to remember before you donate: You must weigh more than 5okg. Eat something within 3 hours before donating. You must be between 16 and 65 years of age. You must be a healthy individual.                                                                                                                                                 So look out for the WP Transfusion Banner around the Western Cape. Overcome your fear of needles and you might just get some cookies and tea while you’re at it. If you are as enthusiastic as I am contact them on 021 507 6300 to get more information on how to enroll as a donor or visit their website: www.wpblood.org.za.

Don’t be discouraged if you are turned down (for not meeting criteria). They need to be sure that they are not putting you, or the recipient in danger. Go on then, and save a life today.
