Most people do not know that Hout Bay has a Township, Imizamo Yethu. This is Lwazi Mkula’s home town. He is a musician. His love for music started in a very weird way, “I got into trouble with the teachers, so as punishment I had to get an extra-mural activity, and the music project happened to be the perfect opportunity,” he said. At age seven in primary school he was introduced to the violin. This turned out to be the best punishment ever. “Any violinist will tell you one of the greatest achievement amongst violinists is being able to play without a bouncing bow,” he jokingly brags about his talent.

He went on to winning Yvonne Parfitt bursary and that is what landed him in UCT. This is not just an ordinary bursary, he had to compete against all of the school pupils in the Peninsula and it is awarded to one student each year. If Lwazi is not the definition of ambition and perseverance, I do not what is.

His achievements do not stop there. He was chosen to perform in the Heineken Symphonic Rocks where he performed with artists like Zahara, and Micasa just to name a few, “I also had the chance to perform with the Dutch violinist Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra in Maastricht in Holland,” he said.

All of this from a young person, 22 years old and making waves. He didn’t go to a fancy school or come from a’rich’ family, he is just an ordinary young person who won’t fall into the trap of not having ambition. He is currently studying Music at UCT and is a loving father to his son. Talk about responsible and success driven.
