The community in Mamelodi, Pretoria was faced with a serious and growing problem: drug addiction. Unfortunately, there was not an effective way of dealing with the issue without any appropriate treatment facilities. Children as young as 13 years old were getting involved with drugs, with many of the affected youth turning to crime.
In July 2010, community member Skhumbuzo Jele decided to make a difference by opening the Second Chance Recovery Centre. They have employed 12 staff members who receive no salary due to the fact that they do not have guaranteed funding.
The focus at the Centre is on providing a holistic programme that will give the affected person the best possible chance of recovery. From the moment that they enter the Centre, they will experience a homely, healing environment. There are experienced medical professionals on the team including a resident GP, nursing staff, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.
The programme includes group counselling and individual therapy. Patients that enter the programme stay a minimum of 90 days in order to facilitate a complete recovery.
Skills development is an important aspect of the programme, in order to make sure that patients can be successfully re-integrated into society. Skills taught include: welding, farming, wood work, electronics, computer training, sewing and drama to name a few.
On average, the Centre has 15 in-patients. One young learner, who has been treated at Second Chance, is back in school, has just passed Grade 10 and is currently completing Grade 11. Another has completed a code 8 driver’s licence.
Volunteers at Second Chance Recovery Centre are the backbone of the success of programme.
