Award winning Kwaito star, Brickz (real name Sipho Charles Ndlovu) was taken into custody on Friday November 1 after a case was opened against him at Honeydew Police station. Brickz allegedly raped a 16-year-old Jo’burg girl on March 26 in Honeydew.
“The only details we can reveal right now as the NPA is that Sipho Charles Ndlovu has appeared at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court facing a charge of rape. Rape is a very serious offence, it falls under Schedule 6, hence we are opposing bail as the State,” said NPA spokesperson, Phindi Louw.
His lawyers are confident his name will be cleared. “Like anybody who is in jail cannot be happy about that. I am of the opinion that my client has a very strong case against the State and we will go there and apply for bail,” said Ndlovu’s legal representative, Isaac Mokgobi.
The 32-year-old Kwaito star who shot to fame with his hit song ‘Sweety my baby’, was denied bail and will spend eight more days behind bars in Krugersdorp Prison. He will re-appear in court for formal bail application on November 12.
Brickz has a history with being on the wrong side of the law. In 2006, he was arrested at a routine roadblock in Randburg when the police searched his car and found drugs. He later described the arrest as a misunderstanding and chose to pay admission-of-guilt fine.
He made headlines again when he allegedly assaulted top stripper, Wendy Butt in 2008. Earlier this year, he made headlines again when he was accused of assaulting a car guard and a hawker next to Mandela’s house in Soweto after his phone had gone missing.
It seems like the Kwaito star cannot stay out of trouble or trouble follows him. But we just have to wait and see how this case will go. Rape is a serious issue and the rate of sexual violence in South Africa is among the highest in the world. Our South African celebrities are really not setting a good a example for young people who look up to them – Gospel artist, Sechaba Pali also made headlines earlier this year when he was accused of allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl.
