On Friday 14 November 2013, Adidas followed up their bumper 2012 originals series – which featured Little Dragon and The Drums – with their first international offering of 2013, Danny Brown.
The gap-tooth, creme-soda-lovin rapper has a reputation for his live performance. After the boombox booty of Little Dragon in August 2012, and the retro nonchalance of my early 2012 life soundtrack, The Drums, in November of the same year, I was willing to take a chance on the trailer trash crazy setting the music press alight.
Last Friday, despite the not-quite-perfect sound and taxing armband system, Brown was every bit the original we’d been promised.
His ‘trademark’ devil horns and miley tongue slip out of him like extra curses, and you know that weird way he raps? That’s what he’s doing with his face too! When he hit the system just before midnight, the crowd in the gorgeous Walter Sisulu Square was sadly patchy near the back. Unfazed, festival-veteran Brown worked his goods for those who wanted to see them work: and werq they did.
His performance ran a little short, but the balmy night was not yet done. Walking into the stone witch-hat of the Freedom Charter, I find a gang of foxy biracial girls in short shorts and eyeliner. Moodily lit, happy and healthy in Soweto at night.
Adidas, unite us!

Danny is quoted in this Pitchfork piece saying,
“People always looked at me, like, ‘Damn, Danny crazy,’ so I kinda ran with it… I would scare even the streetest niggas by hanging out with weird white boys and doing drugs—real killers would be like, ‘What the fuck is you doing?’”
