Charnelle van der Ross, a 21-year-old from Cape Town has a great love for dancing and drawing, but quite often finds herself behind the camera. This young graphics designer also loves spending time with her family and friends, as well as watching movies and reading.

She described herself as a hippie and free-spirited individual. “More than usual, my style has a sort of hippie or bohemian feel, with many earthy colours,” she said. When asked about her favourite pieces of clothing, she quickly mentioned the ripped boyfriend jeans and kimonos. “I love wearing the boyfriend jeans and kimono because of how comfortable they are and pairs well with just about anything. I love loose fitting items”, she explained.

In three words, she describes her style as “chic”, “comfortable” and “hipster-like”. “I like outfits that are easy to wear for a girls’ night out. The way I dress also goes well when I’m just hanging with the boys without actually looking like one of them”, she joked.

She often finds herself mixing “weird” textures and patterns together. Her motto is “if it works, then awesome”. Finding something to wear in the morning is not always a hassle; she especially loves not having to worry about how to style her hair as the frizzy look rocks anything she wears. One of her all-time style icons must be Mimi Elashiry. “The way she dresses is super chilled and I love that about her”, she explained.

Charnelle’s list of “must haves” is the boyfriend jeans, harem pants, one or two really classic jerseys and a pair of high-waist pants. For this young lady, fashion is about expression. “I use fashion to express who I am and how I’m feeling daily. I love experimenting with new styles but always go back to my flower-power ways,” she said.
