Have you ever wondered about those dope headphones worn on stage or behind the decks by the likes of Khuli Chana, DJ Zinhle, Mi Casa, Danny K and DJ Tira?

Well those are supplied by a company called Rocka Headphones and each artist got together with this brand in order to create an individual set of headphones especially for their fans.

The entire design process has been in line with each artist, they (artists) chose the raw mould for the headphones and we engineered the sound in accordance with their preference. With the colour schemes as well, we’re working with them and our designers to get the exact synergy they want” explains Tal.

Tal Bugai co-owns Rocka with musician Danny K and they launched the brand earlier this year at an upscale club in Sandton called Taboo.

We approached Danny K with this idea after my partner who is in China and I spoke, and he just liked it and jumped on,” Tal continues.

Danny was really keen on entering into a partnership with Tal for a project such as this one and together they started a line in a very untapped market in South Africa.

We saw the market in SA, where you had your Skull Candy, your Beats By Dre and you had a whole lot of headphones that turned into commodities. So what we decided to do is we needed to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the market,” he adds.

A very interesting aspect that they plan to introduce with their new line of headphones is the firm protectiveness of the earbuds in the range. They look very chic, hip and funky but they also have a touch of urban street culture in their design.

Our new earbuds are waterproof and sweat resistant. You can run water [over] it and then give it a little twirl and then it’s back to playing music,” Tal confidently explains.

Thabiso and I really couldn’t believe it until he demonstrated it right then and there in his office situated in the deep north of Johannesburg.

As amused as an elephant dipping in water on a hot summer day, we giggled with excitement and were in such disbelief about how this could happen but we were happy that it is possible. The fear of having your earphones fall into water is no longer an issue.

From my perspective, the brand is amazing and Tal confirmed that with his water sorcery. DJ Zinhle – who is both an ambassador for and is the first lady to be endorsed by Rocka – feels just the same if not better…

The headphones really compliment my style while I play. I love the striking feminine colours and the brand quality really represents what I stand for as a professional,” said Zinhle.

She also explained how Danny K was the main person behind bringing her on board.

My first contact was from Danny K, he told me about the amazing opportunity and then I got my management company to do the rest…”

The new line of headphones and earbuds will only be released later this year. In the meantime, you can win yourself a pair by answering one simple question below.
