Let’s face it – reality shows are popular. Keeping Up with the Kardashians, 16 & Pregnant, Roomraiders and the like have through-the-roof ratings. But some of them are just plain bonkers, outlandish and will make you wonder if producers are simply running out of ideas. We’ve picked five such shows and rated them from 1 (off the rails) to 5 (mindblowingly crazy). See if you agree and comment with some your own suggestions.
1. Catfish: The TV Show
This show exposes online dating’s big liars. A catfish – according to the online dictionary, Urban Dictionary – is a person who creates a fake profile on social media. In one episode, Miranda had a “three-year relationship” with Cameryn. The communication was through emails and SMSs. When she flew across the country to be closer to him, he had excuses for why they could not meet. When the show investigated Cameryn, it turned out that, the guy Cameryn is actually Gabby, a girl.
Crazy rating: 3/5 If you don’t know that people generally post nonsense online because they’re hiding behind a screen, then there is no hope for you, my friend.
You can catch Catfish on MTV channel 130 on Wednesdays at 19:40.
2. Virgin Territory
So this show follows 15 virgins between the ages of 18 and 25. Yes, being a virgin is that fascinating it needs its own reality show. The reasons for their celibacy range from Christian believes to the fear of the unknown. One guy kept the secret from his buddies for the fear of them rejecting him. And if that’s not an indication of ill insecurities, one teen decided to get a boob job as a catalyst to get laid.
Crazy rating: 5/5 Have we run out of ideas for entertainment?
You can catch Virgin Territory on MTV channel 130 on Thursdays at 20:30.
3. Bridalplasty
“The only show where the winner gets cut,” was the tag line of this show. Thankfully it’s no longer that, but the show is still ridiculous enough to still talk about. Brides-to-be go through a series of challenges to win the plastic surgery of their dreams in order to look beautiful on their wedding day. So let’s get this straight: some guy decided to spend the rest of his life with this one beautiful person but she’s so insecure and self-obsessed she decides that she needs to get liposuction, a nose job, botox and whatnot to look like somebody else on her wedding day? I don’t want to live on this planet anymore.
Crazy rating: 5/5 If you’re not confident with who you are, then surely you are not ready for serious commitment. Sigh!
(Note: This video is not for sensitive viewers.)
4. Dance Moms
Dance Moms showcases mothers who live their lifelong dream of dancing through their daughters. Classic. Abby Miller is the founder of the Abby Lee Dance Company and hounds, growls and bites her way through getting a group of girls to dancefloor stardom. Many times though, her coaching methods means she clashes with the stage moms who want nothing but the best for their girls. In the video below, a girl got injured and now the formation is unbalanced meaning little Sarah is kicked out of the tournament unceremoniously. The mom of course, is furious and that makes for “good” TV.
Crazy rating: 3/5 Poor girls. Stage parents are everywhere and it really isn’t fair to subject young kids to such trauma.
You can catch Dance Mom on TLC on Tuesdays at 19:10.
5. The Sisterhood
Brothers and sisters, you see them all dolled up and holy on a Sunday morning, but what are they really like? This show follows the wives (first ladies) of preachers and their struggles juggling family life and business life while serving the word of the Lord. This kind of reminds me of The Real Housewives series. One of the wives, Dominique made unwelcome headlines last year after the party-loving sister got too wild on a night out taking shots and going to strip clubs. “I am on a bachelorette’s weekend. I’m expecting to see naked men, partying, clubbing,” she said when questioned by her fellow first ladies. This show was a bad idea from the get-go and many others thought so too as the show got canned after backlash from fellow Christians.
Crazy rating: 5/5 Should we have delved into the church for a reality show?
