As a follow up to his 2012 visit to Cape Town, Live SA met up with London-based producer/DJ Eric Lau during his second visit to South Africa, in Johannesburg, to find out the latest about his music, his thoughts on SA and much more.

Live SA: Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s your 2nd time in SA, what have been your highlights thus far?

Eric Lau: Yes, it’s my second time in South Africa. The highlight is meeting the people and hearing their stories!

Live SA: This is a follow up to an interview you did with us two years ago, what’s happened since then?

Eric Lau: I released two projects, a full length album ‘One of Many’ and a collaborative E.P with Tawiah called ‘Love Call’. I have also been touring and doing different production and remix work for other artists.

Live SA: You’ve been to both major cities in SA, Cape Town and Joburg, as a visitor, what distinctions have you noticed between the two?

Eric Lau: Joburg is about the people, Cape Town is about the cosmic energy.

Live SA: On to your music, how would you describe it to a new fan like myself?

Eric Lau: It takes many forms with the intention to uplift your spirit.

Live SA: The DJ scene in South Africa is big! How big is it compared to the UK?

Eric Lau: The crowd are more expressive in South Africa, people are a but more reserved in the UK.

Live SA: What music have you heard and liked during your time in SA?

Eric Lau: I had a chance to listen to a lot of South African music on the radio during a road trip to God’s Window. I love the vocals in native languages most.

Live SA: What’s the one misconception you’ve found people have had of you?

Eric Lau: People presume I only produce and DJ Hip Hop music. The truth is I love to create and play all forms of uplifting music.

Live SA: What is the thought process when you make music?

Eric Lau: The thought process is not to think at all and to just feel it out!

Live SA: Who do you draw inspiration from?

Eric Lau: Everything and nothing.

Live SA: What do you do when you go through producer’s block?

Eric Lau: I like to talk with friends, read something that will improve myself and I love watching films to gain inspiration.
