I took my camera to capture some moments at the Cape Town Jazz Festival Free Concert which took place at The Greenmarket Square in the CBD Wednesday evening. Those moments when the artists bond with the music, eyes shut and oblivious to their surroundings, that moment music takes over them.

On the bill were up-and-coming Cape Town-based singer Zoe Modiga, Cape Town’s own pop group Beatenberg, Heathfield High School’s The All Star Band, SAMA Lifetime Achievement Award-winner Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse and multi instrumentalist Courtney Pie who closed the show off on a high note.
Every year before the annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival, the organisers put together a free concert at Greenmarket Square for the locals who can’t afford a ticket for the main event. Or those who received the “the tickets are sold out” response upon deciding to finally purchase one, and generally for everyone to enjoy a free concert as a build up to the main stages at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The festival will be happening this weekend between Friday March 27 and Saturday March 28.

I was personally looking forward to seeing the lovely Zoe Modiga, all because I know the great talent she has and also to see the glee on the audience’s faces when her vocals hit their ear drums. And I was right, she didn’t disappoint at all. No question I was also looking forward to Bra Sipho “Hot Stix” Mabuse’s performance. He definitely brought entertainment for the mature end of the crowd, he even had something for the Rastafarians when he performed Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”. Instrument after instrument, Hot Stix satisfied my soul. Beatenberg on the other hand almost put me to sleep up until they performed one of their single’s “Raphael”.
