It’s amazing how even a phrase as simple as Ska Jampisa can prompt such varied responses from people.
Just a bit of background. The Live SA team, in an effort to keep the website banners fresh and relevant, usually comes up with a theme that will guide us through the different months. We’ve previously had the Afrikaofela campaign which was aimed at combating xenophobia, the diversity campaign in April to celebrate Freedom Day and the very first banner that featured all of us was the Free to Be Yourself campaign. We really have gone a long way from then and we’re almost there.
July marks the end of our six-month internship with Live SA, and what an exciting time it has been. But is is also a time to pause, look back on what we have achieved but also look to the future – often a scary thought in a world that is not bursting at seams with jobs in the media industry.
So our theme, Ska Jampisa, is our way of saying that we’re almost there. I know, it sounds like when a boy is asking a girl to sneak into his back-room while his mom is watching Generations: The Legacy. But our story isn’t all that shady and has nothing to do with back-rooms.
At the beginning of the year, 25 bright-faced young creatives started interning for Live SA in Jo’burg and in Cape Town. This proved to be a tumultuous, fun and very informative process.
What started as an application via social media ended up being a platform for forming strong friendships and work coalitions. Not all of the selected participants stayed on the programme; some got employment opportunities halfway through the programme, all thanks to the Live SA team.
The idea behind the Ska Jampisa banner was born from the Whatsapp group that the interns formed at the beginning of the year. Bizani Meyiwa, the graphic designer said, “The idea was initially about how we’re almost done with our internship. Then we realised it was an ambiguous idea and it could fit into anything from exams, a course one is doing, career, summer, winter is almost over, etc. So, in a way we’re encouraging whoever sees it that they are almost there.”
Traditionally, the phrase has been associated with undercover and often illegal happenings. When asked about this, Bizani explained: “I know people say it has a negative connotation of being sneaky and doing things behind closed doors but to me Ska Jampisa means work hard in silence and let your success speak for itself. You’re almost there.”
The Live SA experience is one like no other. You get to meet wonderful people, inspiring mentors and experience fascinating and informative key players in the industry.
But it’s almost the end of the road for Bizani and the rest of us which means it could be the start of a whole new adventure for someone else who is reading this. So if you are a recent graduate in journalism, photography, graphic design, videography and social media, this could be your chance to shine. Remember, Ska Jampisa.
