It’s official. Done. Dusted. The National Convener of the ANC Youth League’s National Task Team (NTT) Mzwandile Masina confirmed that the organisation is ready to appoint a new national leadership at its 25th elective conference on the week of 24th-28th September 2014. This brings to an end a three year effort by the ANC national executive committee-appointed NTT to rebuild the organisation’s regional and provincial structures after it was disbanded by the ANC NEC in 2012.

Speaking at Luthuli House on Tuesday, Masina disclosed that the conference, set to be held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, would be themed: “Rebuilding a united radical Youth League for the advancement of economic freedom in our lifetime.” Yeah.

When asked about the nomination process for the leadership of the organisation, Masina replied that it was difficult to predict who would campaign for leadership positions but that it would be a democratic process and that the nomination process had begun. He also clarified that Pule Mabe, widely regarded as the frontrunner for the position of president, was eligible to stand despite facing fraud charges and being thirty three years-old this year. “Pule Mabe is a member of the ANCYL, he can stand. Magasela Mzobe is a member of the ANCYL, so he can stand,” he said. It seems Magasela Mzobe (pictured), who has been a member of the NTT, is also eligible to campaign for the organisation’s top spot despite the ANC previously stating that members of the NTT would not be allowed to vie for leadership positions. When asked if he would stand for president, Mzobe – present at the presser – said he was unwilling to disclose at this point.

Generations Drama

Interestingly, the ANCYL has picked a side in the case of Generations actors vs. the SABC and Mfundi Vundla. “Our talented actors are still battling to receive UIF, pension funds, housing allowances, car allowances, medical aid and all other benefits that decent work is supposed to cater for,” NTT convenor Mzwandile Masina said. When asked why the ANCYL had taken an interest in the matter, he added that most of the dismissed actors were ANCYL members and that he believes there exists no union or representative body another than the ANCYL to strongly intervene on their behalf.
