This weekend I sat down to watch a musical documentary about a American Hip Hop group that most of the people I know that love old skool Hip Hop considered to be one of the most amazing, influential, and innovative groups of their time. I am mean from seeing the trailers and thinking this is one of those great moments to see how such an amazing collective worked, but to my disappointment it was less about the music and more about the drama. The doccie itself documents how the different members of the met and how they, to the shock of the fans, broke up.
Its set out to show you how a group that offered a “different kind” of Hip Hop, that was more conscious but great to dance to was so successful commercially and otherwise. The group broke up in the 90’s as other members of the decided it was time to give it a rest, this though did not stop members like Q-tip and Ali Muhammud to continue creating music. The group reunited in 2008 for a tour for sold out concerts performing their last album, The Love Movement.
The documentary promises a lot of drama but definitely something to share about how this really kool group of guys got to work together, and how good they were too. It’s now out on DVD, so make sure you try it out.
