Imagine going to the beach picking up other people’s waste whilst sweating under the hot summer sun?Or maybe digging your manicured hands into soil to planting a carrot. Isn’t that a job for hippies? Isn’t this for people who hug trees and walk bare-footed for the sake of saving the environment? Cassidy Taylor-Memmory (editor of the Glam Green Girl blog) proves that you don’t have to be a hippy in order to save the environment. She talks to us about how being ”green” can be sexy and fun.

Tell us about yourself?
I am 23 years old and currently living in Pretoria. I am passionate about saving the environment and love art. I graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2011 with a degree in BA (Visual Studies). I then went on to intern at O, The Oprah Magazine in Cape Town for six months where my love for beauty products grew. I then combined this with my passion for the environment and it became a focus for my blog.
What made you start a ‘green’ blog?
I always been a fanatic about recycling paper since primary school and this then grew into me researching about how recycling could help. I decided that I wanted to share all this information with others and help them to make better choices for the environment.
The Glam Green Girl is a blog that helps you to be more ‘green’ while still being glam. It informs you about how you can help save the environment and what you can do for your planet, whether it be choosing organic skincare or finding out how you can reuse an old light bulb.

In your own opinion Cassidy, what needs to be done in order to make the youth participate in the ‘green’ movement/living “green”?
There should be more campaigns on social media, educating the youth on how to live green. Through the use of social media, you can create awareness which can lead to a passion for the environment.
Is “green” glamorous and sexy? And Why?
Yes it is! Being green not only means you care for the environment, but you also care about your body and your health for example: the type of food you eat, the skin care products you use etc. The world is slowly turning towards a green revolution making eco-friendly, eco-chic!
What DIY projects young people could do and use to live green and contribute to the environment?
Here are some of my simple tips:
– Make 4 recycling bins for paper, glass, tin and plastic in your house and find out where you can drop off your recycling of if there is a company that will fetch it.
- Start switching over to organic skin care products. Its kind to the environment and kind to your skin.
- Instead of throwing away objects, learn how to reuse them. For example, use an old jar as a vase or as a pen holder.

Who is your green icon and why?
My green icon is Indie Lee. She started the Earth Day 2009 after having a brain tumour successfully removed. Her doctors had told her that environmental toxins may have been the source and so this lead to Lee creating her own line of natural and safe skin care products.
What’s your final word to the youth out there about being living-green?
To best describe how I feel about green living is summed up in this quote: “”We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.”-Native American Proverb.
