The Pony Tail Rapper, aka Mr Man of the Moment, who gave us the hit singles “Gusheshe” and “Doc Shebelza” recently dropped a new track. Refiloe Phoolo, better known as Cassper Nyovest, has again caused a huge buzz with his “Phuma Kimi” hit single, made available for free download on Thursday night.

The single is produced by the new kid on the block, Soko, who has production credits on KO’s “Mission Statement”, DJ Vigilante’s “God’s Will” and  Beyonce’s “Drunk in Love”. If you have seen Cassper perform this single at shows I’m sure you might have heard him mention Soko a few times.

The song has a catchy autotune chorus that makes you want to sing along. Soko went buck wild on production and I actually hear some “Drunk in Love” elements in the beat. From the clean 808s to the strings and snares of the beat,“Phuma Kimi” gives you the same turn up as Beyonce’s hit single.

When I first heard this song at Back To The City in April I nodded my head and told my friend and photographer that Cassper has another banger coming up.

Black Twitter went crazy with comments about some of the lines the rapper throws in his song. Some were touched, which is understandable, but hey, who cares about a Tweep’s feelings these days, Tweleb or not? Social media is a fantastic way to get feedback, but it just doesn’t matter if you’ve caught feelings over the song’s lyrics. It’s a fact: the song is banging.

“It’s funny when the Twelebs get to acting like celebs

Used to get frustrated now all I do is get the cash”

Twelebs didn’t let this line from the song pass. They jumped on their smartphones and decided to do best with their opinions on Twitter. Two of the most prominent Twelebs, @SaddieWiggles and @Thickleeyonce, had a little conversation about the line,

The tweets kept flooding in and were interesting to read for a minute or two. Cassper used Twitter to cleverly build up a buzz for the single’s release without people actually noticing. In the song, he mentions the beautiful Amanda Du Pont:

“If she aint Amanda Du Pont she ain’t tailored for me Because I only fuck with women that are as famous as me’’ .

In June, after killing it at the Redbull Beat Battle, Cassper tweeted Du Pont expressing his admiration for her. I thought it was pretty dope seeing him tweet the beauty, but it only made sense if you had heard the song before.

She replied with an “Uhm Thanks”that had Twitter again talking about Cassper and the curve he got from Amanda. This was fun to watch, and at the same time built anticipation for the single he was about to drop.

AKA also got a sharp curve from Cassper after he joined along in the fun, continuing to build the hype around the rapper.

But in the new single, Cassper sends a shout-out to AKA, the self-proclaimed Prince Of Rap,

 “I told my story

And made a fortune

AKA’s favourite rapper guess I made it to the Forbes list’’

It’s a bit contradictory when considering the “beef” between the two but at the end of the day what happens between them is really none of our business. We are all just spectators and all we can do is speculate.

But the “beef” and Cassper’s comments to Du Pont subliminally created a buzz around the release of “Phuma Kimi”. I’m not sure whether the rapper planned it or everything just fell into place, but it worked.

“Phuma Kimi” is hot song and has the potential of doing big things just like the last two singles Cassper dropped. His first album, due for release at the end of the month, is one of SA’s most anticipated and the rapper sure knows it,

“The hype is crazy they asking me where the album at

Put out two singles that niggas push their albums back”

With all the hype around his debut album Cassper Nyovest is definitely on the rise. He has made his mark and has set the pace. This year is going to be one of Cassper’s biggest.

In the mean time, we can enjoy the new single and sing along to the chorus that relates to the majority of us. It’s one of those songs you want to sing out loud when you’re going through hard times or are just getting unnecessary bullshit from people.

I wouldn’t be surprised if rappers push back their singles and albums again to avoid competing with Cassper. A warm winter he has brought to us with this hot song.
