On Monday we will be announcing details of some meet and greet events with Youth Fathers in Joburg and Cape Town.

2014 winners of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize, Young Fathers, are on their way to South Africa. In partnership with British Council Connect ZA and Okayafrica, South African beats platform Weheartbeat and Cape Town’s Assembly Radio are hosting a two-city tour for the Scotland alt-rap heavyweights, in a never-before witnessed salutation to the boundless experiences and opportunities contemporary live music can
create.

Last year in August, the British Council and the South African Department of Arts and Culture launched an open call for proposals from creative artists and institutions to be part of the SA-UK Seasons project, bringing all new collaborations to the live music scenes in their respective cities.

The result is a week of workshops, satellite events and live performances in association with RedBull Studios and Live SA, alongside some of South Africa’s best in live music, including SAMA winner Card On Spokes, Digital Maskandi artist Mashayabhuqe Kamamba and brand new work fro future-sound high-rollers Okmalumkoolkat, Zaki Ibrahim featuring Mr Sakitumi, BIG FKN GUN and A Million Things (Tiago Correia-Paulo of 340ml and Tumi & The Volume-fame.)

The Johannesburg show will take place at King Kong (Verwey Street, Troyeville) on Friday, 27 February and will be streamed live on Okayafrica.com while the Cape Town show will take place on Saturday, 28 February at The Assembly on Harrington Street and will be streamed live on AssembyRadio.com.

“For Weheartbeat this undertaking is the first of its kind, so collaborating with an alternative hip hop act and juxtaposing their grimy UK sound with the Afro-futuristic elements of South Africa is going to be very exciting.” says Dominique Soma, founder of Weheartbeat and British Council Connect ZA’s 2014 Live Music Entrepreneur winner.

Digital Maskandi artist Mashayabhuqe KaMamba is just one of the acts to feature on the lineup as a supporting act and collaborator. One of the most innovative musicians to emerge in 2014, he has much to say around connecting Africa to the rest of the world.
