The EFF’s election campaign is in full swing and to build hype for their official manifesto launch at Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa on Saturday 22 February, they held a rally in Soweto last Saturday, and Monday 17 February they were in action again in the informal community of Boiketlong in Sebokeng. The commander-in-chief, as they call him, Julius Malema was in attendance and delivered a charismatic speech that left the crowd cheering. Live’s Thapelo and Lee were in the crowd too.

Held at a small sports ground in the middle of the settlement, the rally started off with a vibrant soundtrack of struggle songs similar to the ones that landed Juju in hot water during his time as ANC Youth League President two years ago. The army of red berets along with community members recited the words to “Ayasaba amagwala” (The cowards are scared) & “Dubula” (Shoot) all while singing the praises of their Chief, Julius Malema. When he finally got on stage Juju didn’t mince his words – opening his address with “Down with the ANC, down!”

He then ventured into a classic Juju-barrage about how the ANC has failed the community of Boiketlong and South Africa as a whole, saying, “Any person that calls themselves Umkhonto Wesizwe (today) is a gangster and must be arrested.” He soon moved on to Cyril Ramaphosa. He revealed how he believed Ramaphosa, the ANC deputy president, garnered his wealth saying, “Cyril is married to Patrice Motsepe’s sister and they are trying to turn the Motsepe empire into the same thing as the Oppenheimers.” The majority of his speech continued in the same fashion. He named & shamed a number of ANC members and leaders, especially President Zuma. “He (Zuma) is swimming in a pool worth 2 million rand while you (the community) are swimming in a pool of poverty”.

Perhaps as a sneak preview to his organisation’s manifesto launch, he went on to reveal the EFF’s intentions for the nation stating “20 years into democracy our people are still living in shacks, we (the EFF) will ensure that majority of the population have jobs. We won’t take away the government child grant we will double it!” He closed off by emphatically stating, “The EFF is an organization for poor people!” The crowd was left cheering “Amandla!”
