“from mud huts and “umqombothi” straight to penthouses expensive weaves and moet.”
The Diary of a Zulu Girl is a blog by Mike Maphoto, who has become an overnight local celebrity.
Diary of a Zulu Girl is a tale that follows the life of Thandeka Mhkize, a young women who leaves her home town KwaZulu-Natal, in order to study Law at Wits university. As she tries to find her identity in Johannesburg, a city which offers her both freedom and independence, she explores the world of dating and begins to hang out with rich older foreign men. At first she is uncomfortable with the idea but eventually she gets use to it.
Maphoto’s blog went viral as the views sky-rocketed from 30 000 views to 650 000 views in just two weeks!
Followers of the blog feel cheated as Maphoto is a 30-year-old guy from Polokwane who owns a trucking company and has a Law degree from The University of Cape Town. Maphoto states that his blog is based on what is happening in reality and he never intended to create a blog about women as it started as a joke with friends.
Although Maphoto never thought his blog would be so successful, he has been approached by production houses, who would like to turn the blog into a script for TV series as well as a possible book deal.
According to the City Press, Maphoto is in a position to influence his followers and bring new voices to a generation relocating from small towns to Jozi.
