Struck By Lightning is a film about a high school senior, Carson Phillips (played by Chris Colfer). He is randomly struck and killed by lightning. The rest of the movie is about the flashbacks of his life. It’s set in a small town with a population of 9 521. Phillips is desperate to escape the horrible life in his home town and attend one of the best journalism schools – the Northwestern. He dreams of becoming one of the best young writers of the New Yorker. But reality hits him hard, he is stuck with a divorced alcoholic and depressed mother, a grandmother who suffers from Alzheimer and a father who left them for a young woman. With all of this happening, nobody in his high school cares about him or his school newspaper called The Chronicle. Desperate to get into college, he is told that he must start a literary magazine in order to be accepted at Northwestern.

With all of this desperation: will he get accepted to college of his dreams? What price is he willing to pay, in order to achieve his goals?

It’s a story of hope in a hopeless situation where writing allows a teenage boy to escape his realities of his hard life. At first the movie is really boring (like most of American teen movies) but as it it gets to the core of the story, it really becomes interesting, even though I was disappointed with the ending. I expected to see so much more but I guess life has no guarantees. I would totally recommend this movie to anyone who likes light dramas, journalism and doesn’t mind spending 80 minutes watching Struck By Lightning. As well, you will be entertained by familiar faces like Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland who is ever entertaining. I loved how she separated from her Halley character of Modern Family.
