A week after South Africa went to the ballots for only the fifth time in our democratic history, we bring you exclusive behind the scenes images of our #ElectionDay coverage by famous contemporary photographer and director Chris Saunders. #LiveVIPZA #ElectionDAY
The #LiveVIPZA #ElectionDay journey took us to Soweto, where we spoke to the DA’s premier candidate Mmusi Maimane in Dobsonville and to Orlando West where we chatted with the Mayor of Johannesburg Parks Tau and witnessed Winnie Madikizela-Mandela vote. Check out Lee Molefi’s video here. Aluwani, Kabelo, Thabiso and Bongani spent some time interviewing and distributing copies of Live Mag to people waiting in long queues to vote in Alexandra and later, under a rapidly setting sun, we went to Atteridgeville, Pretoria and witnessed easily one of the most jaunting highlights of our year as journalists so far. Read about the our time in Atteridgeville in Rofhiwa Maneta’s article here. We took pictures all along the way of course (selfies included) – check out Siyabonga Mkhasibe’s photo gallery here – and even got some interesting insights into what our role as “born-frees” in contemporary SA could be. Check out Kay’s article “The Born-Free Privilege.” Ultimately, in-spite of the dumped ballot-paper issues the following day, it turned out to be a free and fair election that taught us a lot about South Africa’s political future. Read Lee Molefi’s article #ElectionDay: 5 Things We Learnt. For more, keep with us as we enter the post-election age yo’l. The EFF is going to PARLIAMENT! 🙂
