Art galleries and shops in Cape Town’s city centre stay open until late on the first Thursday of every month to display the cultural gems that budding artists have prepared. Myself and other members of LIVE’s Cape Town office decided to go explore our first ‘First Thursdays‘ and although some of us had never been inside an art gallery before, we thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Our journey started off at Work in Progress, where we met wire artist, Amos Jila and ended at Mystic Loft. Without a concrete plan, we just roamed the streets and stopped at any gallery that was open.
Here’s what the LIVE Cape Town Team had to say:
‘As someone who has no idea about art besides what looks nice to me, I really enjoyed the experience. The vibe in town is great. Can’t wait for 6 March.’- Shani Rhoda
‘I thought this month’s First Thursday was awesome. I think it is a great way for people to interact with artists and art-lovers.’- Mandy Mbekeni
‘Lovely stuff, I really enjoyed the exhibition at The AVA Gallery . I also think that Mystic Loft has such a great variety of antiques. Odette, the creative partner, is so warm and welcoming’ – Cherri-Lee Rhode
The next First Thursdays will take place on 6 March 2014. The participating art galleries are in Long Street and the streets surrounding it. A map with the exact location of each gallery can be found on the website.
