On the first Thursday of every month, people get to explore art galleries, retailers and restaurants of Cape Town’s city centre until late ( for free). Cape Town has participated in this global event since November 2012, giving its citizens a chance to tour from gallery to gallery and enjoy a night of art, artists, live music, food and drinks. First Thursdays is both for locals and visitors. It provides an opportunity for residents to indulge in local culture, mingle with artists and participate in the arts community.

The program also offers visitors the chance to experience, in one evening, the diversity of Cape Town’s visual and performing arts scene. The First Thursdays art walk starts at 5pm and most of the galleries stay open until 9pm . People can start at any gallery on the map, venture their way around in any order they like and also pop into one of the many great places to eat and drink along the route.

The Work in Progress gallery down Church street (which features up-and-coming artists), the Cape Gallery (which exhibits paintings by Peter Meikle and other artists),  Mungo & Jumima and AVA Gallery ,(which is committed to the promotion and advancement of visual arts, artists and curators), are some of the galleries that participate on First Thursdays Cape Town.
