Jargon music hosted the seventh edition of Hip Hop Kaslam at the Baxter Theater on Saturday the 2nd of March.Showcasing the state of spaza and cape town hip hop as whole, the theme of the show was iFreedom yethu. With a handful of people in the crowd the show was opened by Afrikaans rap crew, Mixed mense spitting in cape flats lingo Afrikaans and busting a few moves including a Zulu medley dance. Phizo and Maco also graced the stage but Verassings who is a freestyle rapper and slam poet was the clear fan favorite with his poem which was in Afrikaans,English and a bit of Xhosa.

The main acts as voted for by the people were Axo, Emage gaz’lerhumusha and the Gudfellaz and they all delivered decent performances. Emage did a track called Icherry Yerhumusha dedicated to independent,strong woman and single parents. Axo also came through with a track called My Life Story which is self explanatory, he said he was just grateful to be part of the show because the songs were voted for by spaza fans, and it shows that people love and appreciate his work and that brings him satisfaction.

Gudfellaz were the final act of the show with a song called Qubula which basically speaks about freedom and they had actors supporting them, a nice visual touch on their side.

“Hip Hop Kaslam is a great platform to give vernacular rappers the exposure they need to make it in the music industry and has produced a lot of artists who were somewhat unknown,” said DAT, director of the show and a veteran in vernacular rap.They are now expanding it and will touring Zimbabwe in April.Looking forward to a bigger and better show next year.
