Having a roommate can turn out really well for you, your roommate  could ens up being your best friend, and result in you guys everything together. But for some, moving in with a total stranger could be the worst thing that could ever happen to them.

Jade*, 19, had just matriculated from high school and was preparing to go to varsity, in Johannesburg. She was excited to move into the Big City given the fact she has been living in a small town all her life. This would be a new adventure for her.

Jade* was looking for a place to stay and luckily for her (at that moment) she managed to find one. The flat that she found was a two bedroom flat and there was a girl already living there. She immediately took the flat  for the year.

That’s when she met her Roommate Ruth, 22, who was also a student. “When I first met Ruth she was very nice and seemed so sweet to me and I thought to myself ‘jackpot my stay here will be great!'” she said. They got a long very well and the flat was filled with laughter almost everyday. Little did she know that the “perfect” moment will be short lived.

One day Jade* decided to go visit one of her family members who lived in Johannesburg for the weekend. Her and her roommate were now tight buddies. She told her that she’d be gone for the weekend and would be coming back on Sunday.

She left on the Friday after all her lectures where finished. During that day, a few slight changes happened at the last minute and she ended up not going to visit her other family. The next morning, she went back to her flat.

When she arrived and opened the door she saw that there were other people inside that she has never met before and the place looked like a pig sty. “I didn’t mind the people and the mess cause in the end I knew she would clean it up.” Jade* said. The only problem was when she went to her room where she discovered that people where sleeping in her bed. Furiously, she woke the people up and told them to get the stepping! “I remember closing my room when I left and making sure the door was locked.” She says in an angry voice.

She went to her roommates room, knocking there viciously. As she opened she started confronting her about the whole situation, and how her room was broken into when she  clearly  remembered locking it. “She then became a b*tch to me and told me that the flat is under her name which can make her do whatever she wants because the flat belongs to her.” Jade explained.

After her argument with her roommate she discovered that her groceries had been tampered with. Someone had helped themselves to her food and messed up her pots. “At that moment I felt like crying because I’m a student and I get given a monthly income by my parents and I bought groceries that last for a month.”

As the days went by Ruth* became a nuisance and became very disruptive. Loud music, not cleaning after herself in the bathroom, et cetera. Jade began to look for another place and luckily enough she found another place after a month. She told Ruth* that she’d be moving out soon because she can’t deal with her habits.

The day she was meant to move out,  Ruth* had locked all Jade’s belongings in her room saying that Jade was not allowed to get her stuff until she finds her a roommate. “I thought to myself this girl must be retarded” Jade said with a laughter.

She decided to call the police and her friend who was going to help her move out. The police arrived at the flat and Jade explained to the whole situation to them. The cops told her that she can’t do that or they will arrest her for illegal possession of someone else’s belongings.

As hesitant as she was, she finally opened the room door. She gave the room keys to the officers after they got  frustrated and began to cuff her, mentioning to Jade that she open a case against Ruth. Jade* got all her things and there last thing she said to Ruth is, ”here are your keys.”

It proves to show that you should know a person better and set some ground rules so that you and your roommate(s) can live happily ever after. Do not get too comfy with each other just because you see smiles all the time. Know what will tick you guys off and just be honest with each other.
