Since 2008, every first week of every month, in association with DC Shoes, Kool Out hosts KOL (Kool Out Lounge) – a laid back hip hop event which offers a platform for both up-and-coming and established artists to showcase their craft. The event also offers an opportunity for heads to network and interact. KOL has hosted such artists as, among others, Ill Skillz, N’Veigh, Pioneer Unit and Fifi. Wednesday, the 4th of December (which, by the way, co-incided with Jay-Z’s birthday and UGK’s Pimp-C’s demise) was not any different. KOL hosted Cape Town-based Durban rapper/vocalist/producer, Dilaska.
As per KOL fashion, the night consisted more of DJ sets than the headlining act’s performance. DJ Raiko and DJ Kurt kept the crowd on the dance-floor from 9pm until around midnight when Dilaska was called up on stage by host, Deff Eff. His short set consisted of a Hipe-produced track, called “Celebrate”, an acapella verse and his hit single, “Fly Sister”. Both tracks, we learnt, appear on his current project Suffer No More. Albeit its brevity, the set did manage to showcase Dilaska’s dynamism and versatility as an artist – his ambidexterity: effortlessly rapping in both English and Zulu, striking some vocal chords and performing confidently.
Overall, it was a great night of KOL just like all the other months. The event was well-attended and especially considering that it came two days prior to Cape Town’s Most Wanted – an annual hip hop event which is arguably one of the most important shows in the Cape Town hip hop calendar.
Dilaska’s Suffer No More CD is currently available for purchase.
