“Hi I’m Jimmy and I’m an addict/ The first step to your heart is to admit it/ I’ve been sent to rehab for being under the influence of you.” This is the intro to Jimmy Nevis’ hit song “Heartboxing”, his sophomore single on his debut album following the first single “Elephant Shoes”, which was a national success. The song is about a toxic relationship and also makes reference to the usage of drugs in the entertainment industry. His impeccable voice and immaculate writing skills merged to create a beautiful love song.

Born and raised in Cape Town, Jimmy Nevis is an alternative pop singer, songwriter and producer.  He produced and wrote his own album, titled “Subliminal”, which was released late last year.  The Sociology and Media graduate says he started producing music as a hobby in high school when he turned his cupboard into a studio. He started singing and learned how to play piano at a very young age.

Live caught up with him at the Marie Claire Trunk show and this is what he had to say:

On the future

Jimmy, whose real name is Matthew, has caused quite a stir in the music industry and seems to be skyrocketing to success, so it’s no wonder he believes he might be an international Grammy-Award winning artist in 5 years’ time.  With all that talent and humility he possesses, he may even reach that goal sooner.

On collaborations

Jimmy Nevis is a huge Mi Casa fan and was fortunate enough to fulfill his dream of collaborating with them on their latest album on a song called “Feel The Love”. He also collaborated with Pascal and Pearce on an awesome track titled “Jericho”.  He says he would like to work with more talented artists, including the likes of Beyonce.

On fashion

“True fashion is when what you are inside shows on the outside,” -Jimmy.

He believes it is important to look good but admits he has days when he doesn’t feel like dressing up. He loves the tribal prints that are currently dominating in the fashion industry. He also admires Kanye West’s fashion sense. “His style is gangster and chic at the same time,” said Jimmy on one of the most stylish entertainers of our time.
