Live Magazine has a new crop of contributors. The Johannesburg team share their highlights of week one – orientation.

My biggest highlight from the induction week has to be the first interviews we did with each other, to basically get to know the team and what we’re all about. I also enjoyed the time when Unathi Twala from Channel O and Vuzu as well as her friend from Mzansi Magic came to speak to us about what they do with social media. Getting to know everyone was just a whole lot of fun!

Thabiso Molatlhwa

The induction week was pretty intense, but the new work environment is hella amazing. The knowledge I have gained in the short amount of time can’t be measured! The videography workshop by Khahliso Matela was the highlight of my week. He broke down the history of filmmaking and the way he flowed through the timeline of the history was so capturing. He changed some of my perceptions about how to watch movies and the History Channel.

I must say induction week was awesome! The highlight has to be when Unathi Twala from Vuzu and Channel O came in and had a talk with the whole team. It was really inspiring to meet a young lady who never gave up on her dreams. I was amped after that motivational talk about the ins and outs of this nitty-gritty media industry.

Colleen Balchin

The highlight of my week was the conversation we had with filmmaker Khahliso Matela. He spoke to us about the notion of “decolonising the mind”, dropping ideologies from Mr Credo Mutwa. It’s so easy to forget that we were raised in a society built by our parents – built on the ideas of their parents and their parents before them. It’s so easy to forget that the society they built was warped. Until we take on the task of re-educating and re-analysing our own minds and instincts, we cannot hope to truly move forward. It was also really inspiring to hear one vital aspect of the post-colonial agenda reiterated to us as journalists: Africa needs to be documented by Africans. For too long the continent was bound in a discourse created from without. As young journalists the task falls to us to rewrite our own reality from within. Lets go, Live.

Rofhiwa Maneta

The only words I can use to describe Live Magazine’s induction week are “mind-blowing”! Meeting up with different industry experts (such as Vuzu’s Unathi Twala) was really inspiring and I liked how they gave us practical advice on how to make it in the media industry. If induction week is anything to go by, I’m definitely going to enjoy my time here.

My highlight from induction week was the workshop with Unathi Thwala and Anele Mtsikwa from Vuzu and Mzansi Magic respectively. The point was for us to learn about how to manage different social media platforms, but I personally got some cool life lessons from them. One of my favourite quotes from Anele was, “It’s not that there’s no space for young people, they just aren’t taking it up. Wherever I end up, I make sure I take up the space” and “Invest in yourself and let others invest in you.” I also enjoyed the photography workshop since I don’t have any formal photography knowledge and also because the new junior photography mentor, Siya Mkhasibe, was an intern in the previous cycle.

Lethabo Afrika Bogatsu

The lovely ladies from M-Net, Unathi Twala from Channel O & Vuzu and Anele Mtsikwa from Vuzu and Mzansi Magic, were really inspirational. Filmmaker Khahliso Matela was really enlightening. Learning about the history of African film was not only interesting but also reignited my love for literature (just starting reading Ben Okri – amazing!). I’m really exciting to get to work with all the new team members. I hope they’re ready… (dun, dun, dun).

Kabelo Seshibe

During the induction week, one of the most delightful things was being around the Live team. I felt at home. I share a lot of the same views with the other contributors; we’re similar but different. Vuzu’s social media manager Unathi Twala was an inspiring young person and I really respect her boldness. I’m looking forward to having a radical time at Live!
