On Tuesday Live met up with dance group Vintage Dance Crew in Johannesburg to get their views on South Africa’s current political climate and also pick their brains on what they think of our political leaders this is what went down:

Live: When you hear the words “Freedom of Expression” what are the first words that come to mind?

Vintage: The name vintage just comes to mind immediately. We are the definition

Live: How do you use what you do to influence society?

Vintage: Usually we don’t aim at influencing society at all it’s not something we go out and intentionally do. It’s merely about living our lives the way we want to, but we are also human beings we have our own issues and problems we might share that on a platform where everyone can watch and understand that’s how it impacts them.

Live: How does the current political climate influence your craft?

Vintage: It doesn’t affect us at all. However, if you look at it from this aspect – there are certain people in certain positions who in turn affect the economy and as a result South Africa is going into a recession. The standard of living is getting higher so that’s the reason we, as dancers, expect to earn a certain amount every month. Now, because of all this, suddenly the people who hire us can’t afford to have us. So, economically it does, but politically it doesn’t

Live: Have you ever made a political statement?

Vintage: Like we said before we don’t intend on changing political views but it just happens that we have opinions and we express them through our art form then eventually it affects other people.

Live: Are you voting? For Who? Why?

Vintage: No! (Emphatically) even if we were registered we wouldn’t vote.

Live: Do you think today’s politicians represent who you are as young people? Why?

Vintage: No! Hell to the No! There must a lot of different languages we can say no in! They are old geysers with Apartheid in their minds. They are still living in Apartheid.

Live: What have been your highlights and lowlights of the election season so far?

Vintage: We don’t really pay attention to politics, but if you’re talking about campaigns then we think it was sad and unfortunate what happened with DA and Agang. It was bad PR.

Live: Given the chance what would you do differently?

Vintage: We’d do everything differently! From infrastructure to education. There are so many things wrong with the system and the systems around it. We basically need to start from scratch.
