Barely two months old and Braamfontein’s  FATHER Coffee  has already been rated amongst the hottest and coolest berserk joints to chill out and enjoy your coffee in Johannesburg. Situated at 73 Juta Street in Braamfontein, FATHER has already got people talking and ranting about it. Live SA sat down with Nick Christowitz, one of the owners to find out a couple of must knows about what is it exactly that makes FATHER stand out.

How did you guys meet and how did the the whole idea of opening a coffee joint come about?
There are four of us involved and we’ve been friends for a while. We all share a passion for coffee and beautiful spaces. FATHER is a manifestation of that.

What inspired the name FATHER ?
To be honest it’s just a name we could all agree on. There are four partners in the business and we went through about 200 names. FATHER was the one that made us all go yeah!

Any plans of making your brand/coffee shop any bigger in terms of opening other branches around Joburg or maybe Cape Town?
Possibly, we’re just trying to get shop number one running at full capacity first.

Why did you open your first coffee shop in Braamfontein?
We’ve all always loved Braamfontein. It’s a lively area that’s constantly being rejuvenated. It just made sense. We made the decision pretty quickly.

What inspired the atmosphere – the wooden interior design and the lighting for example?
We wanted to create a beautiful, minimalist space that still felt warm and inviting. We were inspired by Scandinavian design and sensibility.

Your coffee shop seems to attract celebrities or well known names. How do you attract them?
Cool people want to be seen in cool spaces, so we just wait for them to visit.

What is on the menu here at FATHER?
Besides the best coffee in JHB, we have something called a Skhotado. It is a shot of Ultra-Mel, topped with a Ristretto, served with a glass of Red Bull on the side. It’s R100.

There is a lot of competition around the area. What makes FATHER stand out ?
We make good coffee.
