Last week YFM DJ Kay Morgan, better known to the public as DJ Doowap, paid us a visit at our Live Magazine SA offices in Braamfontein to talk about her personal views on this year’s elections; her take on voting; and the impact (or lack there of) politics has on young people. The conversation started off timidly but livened up. Check out what this feisty pink-haired beauty had to say:

Live Magazine: How do you use what you do to influence society?

DJ Doowap: I use my music to evoke a lot of emotion especially with the bass. I like to mess around with the dark vibes so it makes you question yourself and your surroundings. I guess the way I dress also lets people know that you can be out of the box and do what ever you wanna do.

Live: Do you think our politicians represent us as young people?

Doowap: No! I mean come on ANC and Zuma! He can’t even learn to read a speech properly before he gets on stage that doesn’t represent our education system. We have a great education system. Corruption, I’d like to think we’re better than that. I think our politicians are a poor representation of who we are, especially here in the Braamfontein area, where we are up and coming and open-minded. Most of these politicians are super narrow-minded.

Live: You spent a of bit of time in the UK, what was it like living there and how is the general vibe of society compared to SA?

Doowap: In the UK you’re constantly being watched and phone calls are always being monitored. There were crazy stats about the number of times you’d appear on camera in London. It’s really a nanny society where you can’t do anything without anyone knowing. The rules are a bit absurd at times, but they do have some order. Compared to SA the corruption and crime isn’t as bad so clearly they’re doing something right.

Live: Are you voting? For who? Why?

Doowap: I’m not voting and haven’t registered. I’ve never voted before as there’s nothing that’s attracted me to voting.

Live: How does the current political climate affect your craft?

Doowap: It doesn’t affect my craft at all, that’s why I’m not even registered to vote. Personally I interact with every single race, every single type of person and every single mindset. It’s not about a single party that will determine where I am going.

Live: Given the chance what would you do differently?

Doowap: I thought the DA & Agang joining was such a great thing. Then, I was like what?! I might have even registered because it’s two races together and they’re both females.

Live: What do you think went wrong there?

Doowap: They’re females and they couldn’t get along, that’s what went wrong.

Live: So back to my original question, given the chance what would you do differently?

Doowap: I don’t know, maybe I’d legalize weed….that’s probably the first thing I’d do as it would open a lot of minds.

Live: It’s Human Rights month, so are you aware of your human rights? Which one do you think is neglected the most?

Doowap: There is one that I’m aware of in my industry and that is Freedom of Expression. That gets tampered with a lot especially lately. For example, you hear that the ANC didn’t let something be broadcasted on the news because it would make Zuma or whoever look bad.

Live: What issues are important to you as a young person?

Doowap: Transport! I wanna to not depend on having a car and and petrol prices. I just wanna get on a train or a bus and it not be an issue. Transport isn’t figured out yet, there’s Rea Vaya however it’s a bit messed up. When they finally figure it out it will be dope.
