In celebration of Woman’s Day this past weekend, the Mazwai Sisters came together with an all woman band to perform at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, Soweto. The turnout of the event was rather appalling, with most of the seats being vacant and only a few women present. At one moment, I thought I was lost.

Getting seated was not much of a problem, I made sure that I had one of my groupie moments and decided to sit next to one of Mzansi’s talented actresses Warona Seane who plays Lulama Kope on Mzansi Magic’s Zabalaza. Warona seemed to be the only famous face to attend the concert (well my apologies if I was ignorant for not seeing the rest…if there was any). The show started a few minutes late with Ntsiki looking rather ravishing with her African print mini dress and Nomsa with black leggings and peplum, leather-like top. Thandiswa didn’t disappoint with her afrocentric look, she rocked a detailed black skirt and a simple top.

The sisters started the show by singing a song together and soon after that Ntsiki took to the stage with one of her poems. I felt let down as the poem was not that mind-blowing….I still don’t know if she recites or sings her poetry. Nomsa managed to save the night with one of her beautiful pieces. The sisters looked playful on stage, which made me wish I had a few talented siblings in my family too. The night’s vibe managed to ease the sub-standard performance, they perform better as individuals than an ensemble shem.

I had hoped to see a packed theatre, blazing performances and a pumped up crowd…but that fell short.

“The event was not well marketed, I feel they could have done more to advertise the show as we did our bit to market on our side,” said one of the Soweto Theatre employees.

Unfortunately I couldn’t do a post-event interview with the sisters as I was told that they have to rush somewhere after the gig.
