With celebrity kids like Shiloh, Apple and the Beckham clan, fashion for kids has become the in-thing. But the Mother City’s mini fashionistas are also following the runway trends. From print to knitwear, kids from the Cape are hitting the fashion nail on its head.

Fashion is everywhere from catwalks in Milan, the red carpet and even the streets. But the growing trend is definitely in kids’ clothing. The trend-conscious parent feels the need to dress up their little munchkins in whatever is making headlines. Our mission was to find these miniature versions of style and break down what kiddies’ threads is all about.

The streets of Cape Town were the perfect place to do it. One of the boys that caught our attention was one-year-old Dean who was rocking a casual look. His dad said comfort and style are what he considers most important when buying clothes for his boy.

Another look on the pavements of Cape Town, was polka dots. Chi Chi went for this trend when she got dressed this morning. She paired her blue polka jeans with a yellow hoodie (a winter essential) and short boots with a bow detail completed the look. Let’s not forget the mini fashionista favourite, a girl can’t go without a bag, a Barbie one at that.

We found that two-year-old, Oliver had his own twist. He (or rather his mom) decided to mix smart with casual. Wearing brown booties with dark blue faded jeans and a sleeveless grey jersey, the only thing missing from his look was sunnies (which he decided to steal from mom).

It seems the preferred shops to get kitted out on all things fashion are Cotton On and Pep (for the budget buyer). Frequenting these stores are toddler trend-setters who need no help from mom or dad when deciding on their outfits. One of these little fashion-mistas, Rivalin convinced us that he could be a GQ model. Drawing some inspiration from David Beckham, this homegrown boy is leading the way in terms of what’s in style while staying within budget. Wearing a grey blazer, shirt and jeans he made the pavements his own.

It’s clear that fashion is an extension of oneself. It seems even if you still have milk teeth, your clothes are a portrayal of who you are, and a clear footprint of your identity.
