I come from the small hot town which is famously known as the Diamond City, where the “groot gat” is. It’s funny really, a town that has such a rich history, you know the first diamond was discovered on a small farm there, Kimberley got electricity even before Johannesburg – did you know that? Before the June 16 riots happened in Soweto no one ever really says this but  before that a strike took place in Kimberley by young people organised by the Pan African Congress against the education system. So much has happen in Kimberley, you would think that it would be a much bigger city but it isn’t, and you know what, we are Kimbernites are fine with that.

In summer it’s heat is unforgiving and the swimming pools are not easy to find for alot of people, but we make it work with 50c flavoured ice blocks and shade wherever we can find a big tree. When in Kimberley you are surrounded by amazing youths that have dreams that are much more valuable than shiny diamonds. You know what they say about small town people always being super friendly, GUILTY AS CHARGED!

So next time you pass through the Northern Cape, which is by the way one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in our country, pass by Kimberley and be sure to be greeted with warm smile and laughter. No one does it better then us, Awe!
