The ANCYL presented us with a whole lot of sh*t this past week-literally. The politically affiliated youth group took to parliament to protest against the use of port a-loo toilets in the township of Khayelitsha. Suspected members of the ANCYL were reported to have deposited human faeces on the legislature steps in Wale Street, Cape Town. The débâcle stems back to grievances voiced in 20011/2012 when residence of the township demolished external toilet facilities erected for them by the city. Khayelitsha residence refused the toilet facilities arguing that they were constructed without enclosures forcing residents to relive themselves in full view of the community whilst others attempted to cover themselves with blankets.
Tensions escalated following the dismissal of service workers employed by the city to maintain the portable-loo facilities. The ANC has distanced itself from the matter and accepts no accountability:
“The act of pouring faeces on the steps of Parliament denigrates the institution of Parliament itself as a democratic institution of the people, and whilst we agree that the treatment, by the Democratic Alliance government, of the people living in townships is appalling, we distance ourselves from these acts of vandalism.”- ANC
The DA, however, has accused the protest of being part of the ANC’s “ungovernability campaign” and an “ANC plot”.
In other news, we lost one of our boys today as lauded South African player, Benny McCarthy retires from a successful career in soccer. Music heads, loyal fans and groupies (of course) will be glad to hear that artist and rapper “2-Chains” is coming to perform in the motherland on the 6th of July.
