As you may know, October is breast cancer awareness month and today is #NoBraDay, which is an awareness campaign where women are encouraged to go without bras for a day.

As we all know, breast cancer is a fatal form of cancer among women and many are not entirely aware that men can also get breast cancer. Being booby-less doesn’t necessarily make them safe. Men also have breast tissue, hence nipples which makes them equally vulnerable to breast cancer.

I truly understand the aim, as there have been rumours that bras may be the risk factor for breast cancer.

In an article by American Association for Cancer Research, dated 5 September 2014, there is no found association between wearing a bra and breast cancer. Lu Chen, a researcher from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre who was part of the study said that their study found no evidence that wearing a bra increases a woman’s risk for breast cancer and that the risk remains the same, regardless of how many hours per day a woman wears a bra.

Social media is buzzing with some men receiving pleasure out of the bra-less avatars posted by women under the #nobraday hashtag.

In addition to that, a breast cancer survivor, who is against the #NoBraDay awareness campaign, tweeted about why she is against it and how she feels about all of it.

Another fail about this campaign is that people are more focused on the boobs than the actual lives of people who are suffering or suffered from breast cancer. Some of the survivors have lost a breast to cancer and have scars where their breasts used to sit, therefore this is a brutal reminder of what they will probably never have again and maybe this is the reason why they are against the campaign. We need to, even if just for a second, think about the emotional turmoil that those who had to sacrifice their breasts in order to save their lives went through.

It may not be all survivors that are against this campaign but seeing that there are a few who feel this way, are we then saying screw them and their feelings?.

Since we already know that cancer doesn’t only affect women, there should be ways of incorporating men and children to the breast cancer campaigns because they are bra-less everyday already. And there is a need for more informative campaigns that will not in anyway make anyone uncomfortable.
