2014 was a big year for South African Hip Hop. The industry has been on a steady rise for a while and has finally found it’s own voice. We have the gear, the parties, the beef, the proudly South African flavour, the hip hop awards, but we still don’t have any women at the forefront of hip hop – besides the video vixens, of course – and Patty Monroe is determined to change that.

Born Megan Steenkamp and raised in Cape Town’s Southfield suburbs, the MC Lyte and Missy Elliot inspired rapper is signed to AfterLife Talent and, according to her, is not here to change the gender status-quo but wants to take hip hop to a whole new level. Judging by her first offering High Fashion, she will do just that.  She wants to demand respect through her raps and refuses to be labelled a femcee.

Her flow is as slick as Azalea Banks’ on  ‘212’, her cockiness is like Rihanna’s on well…’Cockiness’ and she lays down her lines on an explosive beat you’d imagine Busiswa on. The beat is house-esque while still serving up the same rawness you’d expect on a hip hop song. You can’t help but imagine High Fashion dropping in a club and everyone dropping it low. It’s not only fresh, it’s also authentic.

Patty is working on a project with noted producers Ganja Beats and Blayze and if High Fashion is anything to go by, the project will be ultra-modern. I think it’s safe to say that 2015 will be even greater for hip hop.
