The annual Kings and Queens of Comedy took place on Saturday at the Grand Arena, Grand West, hosted by Riaad Moosa.
Being an avid fan of Comedy Central Presents Live at Parkers (I stay in on weekends… that way I’ll never miss an episode) I was quite disappointed because I’d already heard some of the comedians’ material. However, most of them executed it well enough for me to forgive them.
Jason Goliath opened the show with his flatulence humour. He brought up the stereotype he often faces: whenever someone farts in an elevator they assume it is the ‘fat guy’ (I know most some of us can relate to being victims of the blaming game).
Comedian Jason Goliath
I don’t think Rob van Vuuren was that funny; he was over the top. There’s a fine line between being OTT and being annoying. He was the follow-up act for Mark Banks (the guy who pulled a chicken out of his backpack). Mark was very contentious and maybe Rob was overwhelmed by that. So overwhelmed that he went into the crowd and put his genitals in some poor guy’s face (fortunately said genitals were in his pants).
Mel Jones was one of the stand out acts. She was really funny and she proved that you CAN be funny as well as attractive. I would love to see her do stand up again.
Another stand out act was Donovan Goliath, a very light-skinned coloured who speaks Xhosa. He demonstrated what would happen if potential presidential candidates were to settle their feuds in the streets. Can you imagine a very gangsta Hellen Zille freestyling to the instrumentals of Shook Ones II?
Deep Friedman was offensively funny. He sang about white genocide, encouraged interracial relationships, and made me and the rest of the ‘single ladies’ scream “Yeah”.
Chester Missing and Conrad Koch ended the show
The show lasted until Sunday morning, and what better way to end the show than with the always controversial Chester Missing. Chester made one of the most offensive jokes of the night: “BBM is a support group for people who don’t have iphones”.
The Kings and Queens of Comedy was worth dressing up for.
