Like, every other woman, I love shoes. I’ve always had a fascination with high heels. I only own about three pairs, one of which was last worn at my matric dance. I am mostly a sneakers and flats kinda girl, because they simply make better sense for a student like myself. But, every now and then I do feel the urge to slip into a pair of sexy heels. The urge subsides quite quickly when I remember the pain and regret that came with the last time I spent more than an hour in a pair of heels. I often ask myself why on earth women put themselves through such discomfort. Even though I know exactly what the answer is. High heels are the ultimate confidence booster. They make you feel sexy, taller and slimmer, while showing off your legs. In a pair of heels a woman feels as though she is capable of anything and everything, including running a marathon – yes, it has been done before. I have the utmost respect for women who can spend a full productive working day in heels, and still continue on to party in 6 inch heels (which is about 15 centimeters if you were wondering).

I felt this respect and a tinge of jealously at the Marie Claire Trunk Show, last week Thursday at the Neighbourgood’s Market in Braamfontein. The event showcased over 70 fashion, beauty and fragrance brands and full of fabulous fashionistas wanting to get their hands on the latest local and international designs, while listening to the sounds of Shortstraw and DJ Kenzhero. Unfortunately for me, all I could do was look on in aspirational wonder and jealously as it was evident that my derisory student budget wouldn’t get me anything other than a complimentary glass of sparkling wine that was on offer to all the guests.  By the end of the night, I left feeling inspired by all the lovely ladies and their heels. I got home and dug around my closet for that long-lost pair of black peep toe heels. They needed a little TLC but after a clumsy test run around my bedroom, I was good to go. I think it might just be time to give the sneakers a little break and spoil myself to a night out on the town, if I can manage to leave the house without falling flat on my face.
