The fair will be occurring on the 27th – 30th September at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. In its sixth year running, it promises to showcase the best global contemporary art. The central focus this year is photography.
Some of the exhibitors include Artlogic and Maker Studio who will be presenting The Black Photo Album/Look At Me, with Santu Mofokeng. The photos are archives from ten different families in South Africa, shot between years 1890 and 1950. Artlogic will also be presenting the show, Phantasms of the Non-City, selected from the 2013 edition of the Lagos Photo Festival in Lagos Nigeria.
The Goethe-Institut will be showcasing a collection of video works by artists from the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa). Curator Alfons Hug says that “BRICS has become a mouthpiece and role model.”
Dan Halter, a visual artist featured on Live Magazine’s current issue (pg. 32), will be presenting his project, Heart Land. His unique position as a white Zimbabwean residing in South Africa provides inspiration for his artistic practice. Land uses items and materials characteristic of South Africans and Zimbabweans to articulate his concerns on identity.
The fair also invites artists and curators form around the world to participate in a talks programme. For more information about the talks and artists check out the Talk Schedule.
Launched in 2011, the FNB Art Prize asks galleries that participate to nominate their artists for consideration. The winners are given a cash prize, and a dedicated space at the Fair to exhibit their work. This year’s winners are Nelisiwe Xaba and Mocke J van Veuren.
