It was reported by the Cape Times that approximately 2000 learners fall pregnant in the Western Cape per annum and that only a third return to further their education.

The Provincial Education Department spokesperson, Paddy Atwell, informed the Cape Times that this was not the highest statistic of pregnant learners, who drop out of school, when compared to 2010 and 2011. To combat these statistics the Provincial Education Department implemented policies to help these learners.

Principals and governing bodies of schools in the Western Cape, who will be assisted by the department, are now being instructed to support these learners to ensure that they remain in school and continue their education.

The Provincial Education Department have allowed accessibility to psychologists and social workers to help counsel the learners if need be. However, the support of these counsellors would depend on the stage of the pregnancy and the medical diagnosis of the learner.

The implementing of this policy, as well as the help of the psychologist and social workers , is to allow these learners to complete their matric year in order to better their lives (pertaining to employment). Pregnant learners now have a justified chance to complete their education.
