Blizzard Entertainment gave gamers and non-gamers alike, the opportunity to play Overwatch for free during the Open Beta period from 5 – 9 May. I went ahead and downloaded the game.
Being the inexperienced gamer that I am, I was not quite sure how I would tackle the animated world of people, robots and celestial beings, hell bent on destroying one another. So I started where a non gamer would – the tutorial. The great part about the tutorial was that it navigated the game before I took on the serious combat in the actual game.
Blizzard Entertainment proved they had competitive gaming in mind when developing the Overwatch video game. I experienced fresh and innovative game-play in this first-person shooter genre with it’s animated design which made it fun and friendly competitive play.
For my first go, I played the quick play game with the hero Tracer. She has two rapid-fire, short range pistols that do heavy damage. Tracer is fast, which works to her advantage when escaping the enemy. Surprisingly, I wasn’t the professional I assumed I would be, and my first few tries were miserable failures on my part. But I’m competitive and will not accept defeat that easily so I continued playing and improving my skills by exploring the strengths, weaknesses and play styles of each of the 21 playable heroes such as, Soldier 76 with his rapid-fire machine gun and Pharah with her rocket launcher.
Overwatch proved to be a very challenging video game and I could see my dexterity and spatial intelligence improving the more I played. Gaming has not been one of my hobbies, but I could definitely see Overwatch becoming a favourite thing to do.
Blizzard Entertainment have extended the Overwatch Open Beta for 24 hours, so do not be the gamer who missed the opportunity to play for free.
