No one imagined that I would end up in the media industry.  I was that shy and quiet kid whose head was always buried in a book with a pen and paper in hand for my random scribbling’s. I remember I had dreams about being in the media industry from when I was in Primary school but I never shared that with anyone because I didn’t believe that things like that could happen to ordinary people like me. I didn’t always know what exactly I wanted to be though but I always knew what I didn’t want to be.

I formalised my love for writing by studying for a diploma in media and majoring in Journalism at Boston Media House. As Live Magazine wasn’t distributed where I lived, I found out about it on twitter, after which I applied for the internship and aced my interview. When I applied for the internship I was looking for a place where I could learn everything I needed to know about the journalism industry, from writing to sub editing, I wanted to learn everything because I was at a point in my short career where I was getting frustrated about not being hired by the big media agencies and had just decided to start my own magazine so I needed to work for a place that was going to make me a well-rounded journalist and that’s exactly what I found at Live.

Live is almost like a University, it’s the best place I could’ve started my print career and now Im grateful that those media agencies didn’t hire me because I got to work for Live and learn the invaluable skills I received. At Live I learnt photography, headline writing, photo captioning, social media strategies and editing skills that I would never have learnt anywhere else. I am now the Editor of Live magazine in Johannesburg and in this new role I am learning so much and it also helps that I work with a bunch of cool creatives who work hard and are really dedicated to their passions.

Live has taught me to be more confident and believe that my dreams can come true.  Im not looking forward to the day that I leave Live but I’m happy that I will be creating an opportunity for another young person to learn what I have and I will go in to the industry and make Live magazine proud.
