With exactly 40 days before May 7, election campaigns are intensifying. Mayday! Mayday! Over the past week the ruling party and the official opposition have been embroiled in a mud-slinging fest, things are getting dirty and with the fateful day getting closer, it’ll only get worse! It’s been a busy week in the political world, the ANC won 3 of 5 wards in the KZN by-elections, Agang are the latest party to beef with the IEC having called for the resignation of head honcho Pansy Tlakula. Aaaaaand the Dagga Party was weeded out of contention for the national elections (see what I did there?) after they failed to raise the funds to participate in the elections.
- Malusi Gigaba says the DA are “The devils”
Public Enterprise Minister and ANC stalwart Malusi Gigaba was speaking at a government dialogue with residents at the OR Tambo Hall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town when he used the opportunity to take a swing at the DA and it’s policies. He said “They are not the devil’s brothers. They are not the devil’s relatives. They are the devils themselves”.
- Helen Zille launches Braille manifesto
DA leader Helen Zille launched a Braille version of her party’s manifesto on Tuesday at the headquarters of the League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB) in Grassy Park, Cape Town. The manifesto will also be made available at all provincial offices of the SA National Council of the Blind, at LOFOB and the disability desks of universities around the country.
- The Institute for Accountability calls for Jacob Zuma to resign
The Institute for Accountability sent a letter to ANC Secretary General urging the ANC to ask Jacob Zuma to step down as President or for the organization to recall him as presidential candidate for the May elections. This all comes after the release of the Nkandla report.
- Vote ANC says SABC Chairperson
SABC Chairperson Ellen Tshabalala, who for obvious reasons has to remain politically unbiased in public, actively encouraged South Africans to vote for the ANC when she spoke at the handing over of a house in KwaMashu on Monday. Ironically a Classic FM DJ (who is an SABC employee) was taken to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa by a listener for criticising the ANC on air.
- ANC to take DA to court over chain SMS
After the Nkandla report was released several prospective voters received a chain SMS which read “The Nkandla report shows how Zuma stole your money to build his R246M home. Vote DA on May 7 to beat corruption. Together for change.” The ANC is planning to take legal action against the DA for defamation and malicious conduct, according to Spokesperson Jackson Mthembu. DA Parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko welcomed the court challenge.
