We list the Top Five songs by female hip hop artists in SA

The Castle Lite Hip Hop Herstory concert is upon us. Our herstory has come from the time of Thembi Seete and Godessa to the new era of Rouge and Nadia Nakai. To celebrate the women in SA hip hop, we have decided to list our Top Five songs by hip hop artists who are women.

This list is totally subjective, so if you see that your fave hasn’t been included, feel free to add your Top Five in the comments or on our social media pages.

No. 5 Isaga Lam- Miss Pru DJ ft LaSauce, Gigi Lamayne, Nadia Nakai and Londie London

Miss Pru has outdone herself on this one. The vocals are on point and both Gigi and Nadia put their best rap foot forward. Isaga lam also has a music video with outstanding visuals. This song might be new but it has already found a place in the halls of hip hop history.

No. 4 Mbongo Zaka- Rouge ft Moozlie

Rouge and Moozlie came together to give us this club banger. The beat is fire and the verses flow effortlessly to give the listener 4 minutes and 27 seconds of head bobbing. This collab cemented Rouge’s status as a force in the SA hip hop industry. Tweezy produced a bop. That’s all I am going to say, this song is a bop.

No. 3 Social Ills- Godessa

Godessa has become synonymous with activism through music. Their songs always carried a strong message and Social Ills is no exception. 16 years later, the song still speaks to the social climate of the country. Social Ills was also an achievement in lyricism, the message was brought across beautifully and with impact.

No. 2 Nkae ketsang- Thembi Seete

You knew it was about to get lit when Thembi Seete said “Holla, yes y’all.” Nkae ketsang still divides the nation, with some loving it and others feeling that Thembi did us wrong. One thing is certain, you have found yourself singing “I don’t know what I’m gonna do with myself.” at some point in your childhood.

No. 1 Now or Never LeFemme Remix- DJ Cosmo and (most of) the female hip hop community

Bars on bars on bars, this song offers some of the best verses over a tight beat. We have almost the entire female rap community in one song with DJ Cosmo showcasing their skills and challenging the norms of hip hop. Everyone brought their A-game but the best verses belong to Rouge and Patty Monroe. We need a Now or Never Pt 2 and we need it now. Ms Cosmo, are you listening?
