Choosing the best movies was not a walk in the park . Questions were raised by my opinionated colleagues, questions like “what qualifies a movie to be the best or great?” The editor and chief sub-editor both said, “You have to watch the movie over and over again, without losing the interest of the movie.” I have compiled movies such as The Reader, classic Titanic, No country for old men and Black Swan just to name a few. Check them out and, if you don’t agree, please feel free to comment.
Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor
This movie will awake you on making bad choices in life. It questions whether love is really enough. It is one of my favourite movies from Tyler Perry. Check out the trailer.
Fast and Furious 5
In the Fast and Furious franchise, this has to be the best one thus far. It’s more action, more adrenaline rush and the location (Rio de Janero) is awesome as well. It doesn’t get any hotter and faster than this. Check out the trailer.
Prayer for Bobby
What an amazing movie. Based on a true story, this film depicts the life of a mother who has difficulties in coming in terms with her favourite son being gay. The mother gets a wake-up call after her son commits suicide. It’s a movie about finding closure and at the end, learning the important life lessons of them all, which is unconditional love.
The Reader
A beautiful well written and well-performed movie about a young boy who falls in love with an old and illiterate woman. The journey of their relationship is powerful yet it has to be hidden because of the shame attached in dating older women. This is more than a sex relationship, it’s about the way the cougar finds comfort when the young man reads to him.
The Devil Wears Prada
The movie is about a young graduate who comes to New York and lends a job as an assistant fashion magazine editor. When she enters the fashion world, she ends up losing her values and on the side, her relationship is crumbling. She finally learns that everything is not what it seems in the fashion world. It’s a comedy/drama.
Black Swan
Oscar winning performance by Natalie Portman moved me in so many ways in how much a ballerina is obsessed with reaching perfection. Nina (Portman) plays the white swan perfectly but when she has to play the black swan, she loses herself in the moment and ends up thinking like a black swan. This pyschological thriller keeps you on your toes questioning what price Nina is willing to pay to reach perfection.
No Country for Old Men
This thriller film is based on the novel of the same title by Cormac McCarthy. it’s about a man who stumbles upon millions in the desert of Texas and dead bodies along with the cash and with that follows violent trouble. This film is not for the faint-hearted.
American Gangster
Best biographical film ever produced about the life of Frank Lucas – a notorious gangster who struggled drugs. Denzel Washington played the role very well.
Jerusalema
This is a local film and this movie starring Rapulana Sephemothe is an embodiment of the phrase “local is lekker”. It’s about a gangster named Lucky who wants to have the big life in the ’90’s using criminal activities.
Titanic
An all time favourite for everyone, this movie won 11 Academy Awards. Titanic is a film about two youngsters; Jack (Leonardo Di Caprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) who are from different social classes and they end up falling in love after meeting on board Titanic. The movie revolves around their love and struggles until when the ship sinks after hitting an iceberg and their love is then tested against death.
