University of Pretoria students yesterday marched through the streets of Hatfield and on campus as part of the #UPrising student protest.
The students had been protesting since the early hours of yesterday morning.
The streets around the university’s Hatfield campus were filled with students who were singing struggle songs and wearing T-shirts that read “#Uprising”.
The students had a list of demands; they included free education and that food prices at the cafeteria be reduced.
Students marched through campus and tried to get into the library to get those who were studying to come out and join the protest.
Vice Chancellor and Principal Cheryl De la Rey was supposed to address students but left because she felt unsafe, only to come back later to address the students. De la Rey said she wanted to meet with student leaders in order to discuss their demands.
Students continued to protest on the streets until late into the afternoon before going back to campus for a night vigil. #FeesMustFall
