Friday URGE: free wine tasting and live jazz evening

Urban Rural Growers Emporium (URGE) hosts a free wine tasting on Fridays followed by live Jazz at URGE corner Loop and Buitens street in Cape Town. The free wine tasting kicks off at 4 pm -6pm followed by the live Jazz performance from 6pm-10 pm. The jazz duo consists of the guitarist Royston and the vocalist Leonie, they play laid back Jazz style.

Ashley Kriel youth memorial lecture: University of the Western Cape (03 October)

In commemoration of the youth who played a huge role in the struggle against the apartheid regime, the University of the Western Cape will host a memorial lecture to honour past youth leadership,celebrate current youth achievements in leadership and debate the challenges facing the youth today. The lecture is a culmination of the year’s work and continuation of conversation generated throughout the year. It will be held at University of the Western Cape in Bellville at the Life Science Building and the lecture will start at 6pm-8pm. Entrance is free.

The Frontiers Men (3-12 October)

This fast paced play by an award winning play writer Louis Viljoen – starring Nicholas Pauling, Mark Elderkin and directed by Greg Karvellas – follows a story of two men who go to extreme lengths to secure a lucrative real estate deal. The play will run at Alexander upstairs,67 Strand Street from 3-5 October at 7pm and on 8-12 October at 9pm. This plays carries a ‘no under 18’ age restriction for its explicit language and mature themes.

The Blacks Only comedy show (04 October)

The Blacks Only comedy show will start off on the 04 October in Grand West Grand Arena in Goodwood, moving on to Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth on 5 October and back to Johannesburg on 12 October at The Big Top Arena,Carnival City. The line up will include the likes of David Kau, Marc Lottering, Chester Missing,Tumi Morake, Chris Forrest to name a few. Tickets can be bought at Computicket and they start from R186-R288.

This Western Cape multi-sport festival will offer fitness challenges for everyone from kids and teens to adults. The festival will take lace on Saturday 05 October in Clanwilliam. SHNIT SHORT FILM FESTIVAL (2-6 October)

The SHNIT Short International Film Festival marks its 4th year in screening short films. It will include a selection of some of the best short films from this year. The screenings will take place at the different places but the official home for the festival will be at Labia Theatre, Orange Street, Cape Town. There will also be screenings at Pulp Cinema and 5 Ryneveld, presented by Cinemuse in Stellenbosch and at City Varsity in Kloof Street, Cape Town. One can expect a variety of short films from fiction, documentaries, animation shorts and exclusively local made films. Tickets will be available at the venues and cost R30 per person.

2013 African Creative Economy Conference (6-10 October)

The 3rd African Creative Economy Conference and the 4th Arterial Network Biennial Conference will be held from 6-10 October at the City Hall in Cape Town, with a parallel programme celebrating African creative industries. This event is expected to attract more than 300 delegates from around the world including visitors from at least 40 African countries. Government bodies, journalists, entrepreneurs are all invited to conference, registrations can be done at here.

ART: Observations of Life (3-26 October)

The exhibition which brings together a group of painters who mutually express a rich appreciation for small aspects of day to day life, paying attention to the overlooked moments. The exhibition will be at The Cape Gallery, 60 Church Street, Cape Town at 6pm, entrance is free.
