#4 is…

A collaborative visual narrative by Ruramai Rudo Musekiwa alongside four writers. The overarching theme in this introductory body of work is freedom, a relative concept but relevant in its subjective definition. Juxtaposed with inner conflict the four writers bring in an interesting dimension to this visual narrative by each writing a stanza of poetry that culminates in one cohesive ‘story’ about inner conflict and the idea of freedom beyond our silent internal battles.

These writers were revealed a week prior to the introduction of the first segment of this four part narrative which unfolds online (from the 14th of October). Drawing influences from David Tshabalala’s #run the world ‘14 “installation” that used Instagram as a digital exhibition platform.

The Narrative unfolds on these dates:

14th October

16th October

21st October

23rd October

It will remain online and the physical exhibition begins on the 31st of October to the 30th of November in JHB and CT, the venues are to be confirmed on their social networks this week.

Presentation…

Phase one is the digital exhibition, showcasing the artwork online in a ‘book’ format and on social media platforms. Two segments per week will be presented online from the 14th of October 2014 – 24th October 2014.

Phase two is the physical exhibition… the four illustrations and poems will be printed in large format for exhibition in two spaces. (Johannesburg & Cape Town) from the 31st of October 2014 to the 30th of November 2014.

When Ruramai Rudo Musekiwa, the illustrator was asked on what the purpose of the Narrative is, she replied “Our common denominator as human beings is an intrinsic desire to be free. What separates us is how we define/ perceive that concept… does our ‘struggle’ take shape in a collective political or social construct or in solitary silence? Fear is everyone’s enemy, an enemy that cripples possibility, annihilates hope…”

And she further added that “Discovering the very essence of freedom is perhaps in the journey and not the destination… perhaps in the shift that occurs when we gain new perspective, the leaps we take when terrified yet fiercely fearless, abandoning and unlearning, peeling away the layers of repression, perhaps freedom is the journey that begins when we begin to question the very things that cast shadows of doubt on our greatness, beauty and fulfillment.”
